Delhi Police: If You Report Your Rape, You Weren't Really Raped.
This is life for the growing number of rape survivors in India -- most of it thanks to the Delhi-NCR police.
Tehelka, a local paper, has released an article revealing a level of misogyny almost unprecedented in any police force. According to these cops:
- Unless a woman is covered head to toe, she wants men to rape her.
- If a woman is in a sexual relationship and is unmarried, she deserved to be raped by him and his friends.
- If she was around drunk men, she's lying about being raped to protect her "wayward" reputation.
- Upper class women don't know how to behave, and lower class women are all prostitutes.
- And the worst by far: If you were "really" raped, you'd be too ashamed to say anything; so if you're "complaining," you must be making it up.
PETITION TO CHIEF KUMAR: Tehelka's expose on your police force illustrates how much the misogyny in Delhi's officer corps needed to be address. Help battle the stigma against reporting rape -- take your officers to task for blaming the victim, now!
